NATIONAL OPEN THREAD: THE COMMENTS WILL NOT BE TELEVISED

All games, anything goes. And unlike the Outback Steakhouse, I mean it: no rules. If they ever let me back in one of those places, they'll learn what real anarchy is.

Real anarchy, for example, is color-coded.

I realize, of course, participation today may be light, as we're just getting back into the swing of open threads 'round here, but it's a building process. Building to the tipping point and other relevant marketing buzzwords indicating success. Be a part of the wave!

Good idea
We need a central hub for national chatter.

Why not here?

by PB @ BON on Oct 6, 2007 11:32 AM EDT   0 recs

Let's see how it goes.....
Although for me, South Carolina already won, so it's one of those very weird, calm Saturday's.

I should probably get some things done I need to do.  I think I'll stay here and watch Illinois beat Wisconsin.

by USCKB on Oct 6, 2007 11:58 AM EDT   0 recs

Here we go
Same for me USCKB, although for different reasons. Well, SC winning has me calm too (because they beat UK, thanks for that).

The UofL message boards are awash with player rumors and Kragthorpe horror stories. I can only stand it for a few minutes at a time, and I'll be here to see real football discussion all day.

Thanks, SMQ!

by CardsFan922 on Oct 6, 2007 12:14 PM EDT   0 recs

Sorry U of L
The Kragthrope thing, I never expected it to end up like this.  Does he even see Year 2?

What games is everyone watching?
I've got the Ill/Wisc game on, and am using Gametracker to follow WVU/Cuse (which only I among the many on this thread will care about). This is my first season watching games in HD, and when games AREN'T in HD, I almost feel insulted. WVU/Cuse is on gameplan and on a local affiliate, and is not in HD.

Although with the orange uniforms, I'm not sure that's a bad thing.

What about everyone else?

by CardsFan922 on Oct 6, 2007 12:17 PM EDT   0 recs

Games...
I've got Illinois-Wisconsin. I really like Illinois - Arrelious Benn is obvious, but Rashard Mendenhall has to be one of the most overlooked backs in the country. Wisconsin is not very good on defense right now (see MSU last week), but Mendenhall is really strong. He's run through pretty much every defense he's faced going back to last year.

I see Auburn's going with some kind of "throwback" look, but the only difference is there's no logo on the helmet. I guess AU hasn't changed its uniform design in 50 years.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 1:05 PM EDT   0 recs

...more Auburn jersey thoughts...
They should have brought out the Pat Sullivan era, see-through, tear-away mesh, the flimsiest uniforms on any level of all time. You could see every detail of the old, barely functional shoulder pads underneath. That's the sort of thing people pay to see when you're playing Vanderbilt.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 1:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yep
Honoring the 1957 MNC team, which was one of the most bad-a$$ defenses you'd ever want to see.

And yes, they 'sperimented with wierd jerseys, but it wasn't the Pat Sullivan era, it was under Dye in the 80s when folks like Bo Jackson wore 'em.

As to the game, what happened to that anemic AU offense?

by JPK on Oct 6, 2007 1:16 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Oops,
shoulda looked at that pic. Forgot they had those back then. Were wearing what they do now when I was there 73-76.

by JPK on Oct 6, 2007 1:18 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It's all working for Illinois...
...Juice Williams, with all day to throw, just lobbed up a duck that should have been picked off by two Wisconsin players on the sideline, and his fullback of all people went up and took it away...aaaaand touchdown Mendenhall. Illinois is kicking ass.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 1:12 PM EDT   0 recs

GT/Maryland
GT is strugling with the Terps and Choice just took himself out again with what looks like a hammy.

by EOWT on Oct 6, 2007 1:27 PM EDT   0 recs

Ugh
Can I change my pick of GT over UMD? It was based on Tech being a different team with Choice in the lineup. Maybe Maryland is good? Is that possible?

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 1:35 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Choice
He's back in, but they still are stinking up the joint.

Miami/UNC
Wow, go TJ Yates

by John on Oct 6, 2007 1:39 PM EDT   0 recs

'We'll see Kirby Freeman in the second half'
Things, uh, things are not going so well for Miami.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 1:44 PM EDT   0 recs

To hell with UNC.....
Having to go to CH next weekend without tickets, and this is only going to convince their fans they have a chance to beat us.

I'm still infuriated we scheduled this game if UNC was only going to give us 6k tickets.  I'm in the DC area so I'm not getting the AU / Vandy game, but all of the ones we have right now are crap up here.  I think WVU v Cuse is the closest?

I'm watching Friday Night Lights replay on USA.  Please bring on UGA / UT.

Really?
Jesse Palmer: "Everybody's talking about Mat Ryan for the H*i*m*n Trophy." Is that a fact?

Ummm......
Jesse Palmer shouldn't be employed in any football capacity - that, good sir, is a fact.

Looks Kansas-KSU is the game of the morning
14-14 at the half, although I suspect Wisconsin will be making a push.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 1:56 PM EDT   0 recs

Still suck w/ nothing in this part of the country
Although Wisc could get frisky with a score on this possession.

Other than that, WVU is done and at this point I'm just watching to see if Miami reemerges from the locker room.  Honestly, I can't blame them if they decide not to.

by USCKB on Oct 6, 2007 2:04 PM EDT   0 recs

Kyle Wright Has Had Enough Of Your Crap America
Miami's waking up, they're on the board and just recovered a fumble

OMG!
Kansas' tailback is white?

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 2:06 PM EDT   0 recs

It's Kansas
Convincing black guys to come to Kansas is one of those things that's comparable to convincing white guys to come to Compton.

by Tom on Oct 6, 2007 2:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Whoop
Illinois blows coverage deep, true freshman burns em for a touchdown. This is where a losing team starts to fade. Big momentum possession coming up for the Illini now.

I'm not sure "everybody in the house was thinking run" on 2nd-and-12, Andre Ware, but Illinois' safeties sure were.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 2:12 PM EDT   0 recs

Illinois response: touchdown
Big drive to answer right there. Wisconsin looks like it's completely mystified by the option.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 2:23 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

KU/K State
Kansas is charging; the last two plays featured a toss to the white running back and now a quick 1st down involving the white wideout...they're breaking down the barriers today

by John on Oct 6, 2007 2:22 PM EDT   0 recs

Mendenhall Again
Illinois takes command of the game again. No one talks about the guy but he is looking beastly. Granted it is Wisconsin, but still.

by mopper on Oct 6, 2007 2:23 PM EDT   0 recs

Whoop
Kansas roughed the punter. That means touchdown K-State coming up...

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 2:29 PM EDT   0 recs

HA!
The sideline reporting babe on FSN just butted in to reference the Buskwhackers to describe Ron Prince's celebration dance against Texas. That girl's goin' places!

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 2:34 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Well, only a field goal
You rough the punter, you're giving up points.

Big Kyle Wright
Kyle Wright gets a tremendous boost to his stats with 97 yards to ESPN Mag story Darnell Jenkins. Oh and Miami is back in the game.

by mopper on Oct 6, 2007 2:41 PM EDT   0 recs

UM 20/UNC 27
Randy Shannon must've done some newspaper magic trickery of his own at the half

But it looks like it just wore off, Kyle Wright just got mooshed

by John on Oct 6, 2007 2:42 PM EDT   0 recs

Sheesh
I was hoping Auburn would have a letdown after beating Florida.  Instead, they're killing Vandy.  Chris Nickson has been unceremoniously yanked for the second time this season.

by Tom on Oct 6, 2007 2:49 PM EDT   0 recs

Man, Donovan is lucky
He hung that last throw out there to get picked off.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 2:49 PM EDT   0 recs

Wisconsin is just not impressive
They still have a chance to win this gane, obviously, but it will be about the fourth week in a row you have to hold your nose to keep the Badgers in the top ten. Every win has been lackluster...and he didn't get away with that throw. Picked. This is the first good look I've had at Wisconsin, and it's not conference championship material. Not today.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 2:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Mark Magino...
FSN just showed him calling a time out and it was horrifying. It's a miracle that guy doesn't have a heart attack just waking up in the morning

Makes two huge plays for the Illini on that Wisconsin drive. Would Wisconsin beat any other team in the top 10?

NW and MSU are tied?

by John on Oct 6, 2007 2:55 PM EDT   0 recs

Whoop
Big INT for K-State, completely the fault of the receiver on one of those little down-the-line bubble screens. A KSU player ran over the ref on his way to celebrate with the interceptor.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 2:59 PM EDT   0 recs

...and the go-ahead touchdown.
K-State has gotten so much mileage out of the halfback pass. Texas, Auburn, now Kansas - they've scored on it three times in the last eight or nine games.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 3:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Vonte Davis INT
Wisconsin can't win this game with Tyler Donavan making those kind of decisions.

by mopper on Oct 6, 2007 3:02 PM EDT   0 recs

You kinda get the feeling...
...that Wisc wasn't winning regardless of Tyler Donavan's decision making abilities (which are a little suspect).

by John on Oct 6, 2007 3:05 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Donovan
...is doing his best to throw away the game.  Can Illinois actually pull this out.  SMQ is right, one would be hard pressed to elevate Wisky to pedestrian up to this point, but still!!

by marcillac on Oct 6, 2007 3:03 PM EDT   0 recs

Wisconsin has no clue on the option
Illinois just shoved it down their throat with a true freshman backup quarterback who isn't about to throw a pass.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 3:09 PM EDT   0 recs

Proverbial Fork Wisconsin...
...Wisconsin proverbial fork

by mopper on Oct 6, 2007 3:09 PM EDT   0 recs

Hard to believe
That I'm watching Kansas. They've been offensively inept so often in recent years that it's just weird to see them play competent offensive football.

by PB @ BON on Oct 6, 2007 3:09 PM EDT   0 recs

Huh?
Maybe somebody can explain why Kansas, who just scored to take the lead, 27-24, opted to go for 2 instead of taking the point after?

by John on Oct 6, 2007 3:11 PM EDT   0 recs

Didn't go for two...
...botched the hold on the PAT.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 3:13 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh, wait
Kansas blew the PAT attempt...it's all coming together now

by John on Oct 6, 2007 3:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That was a fumble
Wow! What a gift!  PB - What do you think of Kansas in Big 12 North?

by marcillac on Oct 6, 2007 3:13 PM EDT   0 recs

Oh snaps!
K State might have just thrown the game away

by John on Oct 6, 2007 3:17 PM EDT   0 recs

K-State has to hold to a field goal here
...and just got a break. Tight end was wide open as he could be in the end zone and just dropped it. KSU will still have a chance for a two-minute drill.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 3:21 PM EDT   0 recs

What the hell
Just 10 minutes ago I was watching the 1st quarter of the Ill/Wisc game. I close my eyes for 2 seconds and now its the 4th quarter and there are 60 comments!

Illinois has looked good from what I've seen. Although they just gave up a desperation TD with 1:30.

by CardsFan922 on Oct 6, 2007 3:23 PM EDT   0 recs

Ball game here...
...fourth down for KSU with 1:19 to go

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 3:27 PM EDT   0 recs

Picked off
That's it for KSU. Kansas is about to be 5-0 and I'd say the favorite in the Big 12 North unless Nebraska or Missouri is gangbusters tonight.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 3:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Peace out KSU
No Bushwhackin' for Ron Prince tonight it would seem

Thanks K-State O-line.

My wife says that Illinois should go for the QB sneak.

We'll see if she has more balls than [coach redacted].

by marcillac on Oct 6, 2007 3:31 PM EDT   0 recs

My god
Illinois is going to beat Penn State and Wisconsin back to back.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 3:32 PM EDT   0 recs

Nice
Although since Illinois was favored by Vegas, I wonder if people will use the "shocks" and "upsets" headlines.

What controls how shocking something is?

by CardsFan922 on Oct 6, 2007 3:40 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Wow
Illinois in sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. Kansas the odds-on favorite to play in the Big 12 championship game. South Florida-Cinci could decide the Big East, Virgina is 3-0, the South Carolina/UK game might be a deciding factor in the SEC East race.

Up, down. White is the new black. Left, you will now be referred to as right.

sweet
a place where I can toss dirty expletives as my MSU Bulldogs trail ANOTHER homecoming to a C-USA doormat.  And as I type this with my team down 10-3 with 2 min left, and as we are forced to kick a 20 yard punt, all I can think is

What.  The.  Fuck.  Not.  Again.  U.  Fucking. A. Fucking.  B.

I think I'm gonna need a bottle of whiskey.

by aconstipatedmonkey on Oct 6, 2007 3:44 PM EDT   0 recs

Sorry dude
Didn't you beat Auburn? And therefore are better than Florida? That's worth something.

Oh ya, its worth FSU > UAB > Miss St > Auburn > Florida. Which, when there are 10 11-1 teams at the end of the year, may have something to do with something.

by CardsFan922 on Oct 6, 2007 3:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

If ONLY that were the case
Let's just say that being outgained 189-49 on one's homecoming does not get the fanbase pumped.  UAB also lost to the other MSU 55-18, and of course that MSU just lost to Northwestern.

I think the whole season needs 117 differential equations to figure out.

by aconstipatedmonkey on Oct 6, 2007 4:03 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

What's really creepy
is how entertained the ABC commentary crew was by Talkin' Bevo

Maybe not so creepy as much as it is shameful

by John on Oct 6, 2007 3:44 PM EDT   0 recs

That looked like a catch
Shouldn't the default be to call it a catch since "incomplete" is not reviewable?

by CardsFan922 on Oct 6, 2007 3:47 PM EDT   0 recs

Two things
  1. Pat White was hurt again? Wtf. Maybe RichRod should reconsider the whole "let the franchise players get hit on every play for the last 2 years" strategy. You know, give someone else the ball every so often. Their season broke down last year after both Slaton and White had nagging injuries and had to play hurt or sit out.
  2. Both OU/Texas and GA/Tenn are at a commercial at the same time and I still couldn't turn on PSU/Iowa.

by CardsFan922 on Oct 6, 2007 3:50 PM EDT   0 recs

Hey PB
There's Tweedle Dee breaking up a pass against Kelly, who's about 6 inches taller. Nice play.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 3:53 PM EDT   0 recs

Down goes Michigan State
Forty-eight points o Northwestern? Is this the start of MSU's October collapse?

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 3:55 PM EDT   0 recs

Will Dantonio ever learn?
At Wisconsin, 3rd and 2 just outside of FG range, down 3, a minute to go. Plenty of time to run the ball once or twice, even with no timeouts. We've been gashing them all day with the run. So what do we do? The same damn screen we'd run the last seven plays, they cover it both times, game over.

Against NW in OT, needing a touchdown, Ringer's averaging over 10 yards a carry (again!), we have 280 rush yards ... and we throw four times. Hoyer misses the receiver badly all four times. Game over.

When the game is on the line, put the ball in the hands of your best player, dammit! (And no, Hoyer is not your best player. On a good day he's adequate. On a bad day he's almost as wild as Morelli, though he at least has the sense not to throw a gazillion picks like Morelli does.)

John L made the same damn mistake every time. Dantonio didn't learn from that. And apparently he didn't learn from his own repetition of that mistake last week. If he doesn't learn after doing it a second time, maybe he shouldn't even get a second season. I hate saying that, but if he can't learn from his predecessor's mistakes or his own, he has no business being a coach.

And while I'm ranting, could we please, please recruit a damn corner?

PSU/Iowa
Couldn't pay me to watch that shit.

by marcillac on Oct 6, 2007 4:02 PM EDT   0 recs

That motion seconded
This is why living in Ohio sucks. I am stuck with PSU and Iowa on ABC, and for the mirror game on ESPN2 I have FSU and NC State. In fact rather than attempting to view Iowa and Penn State, and risking  poking my eyes for fun, I am watching USF and FAU on ESPNU during UGA Tennessee commercials.

by mopper on Oct 6, 2007 4:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

That is the trend.
Next up for MSU, Indiana, Ohio State, Iowa and Michigan. Indiana is heading for a bowl, Ohio State is the best team in the Big 10 by default, and Michigan holds the Spartans to a never ending position as the second fiddle in the state. They will beat Iowa, and maybe Indiana. Thats it.

by mopper on Oct 6, 2007 4:05 PM EDT   0 recs

I'm confused
Oklahoma and Texas have not scored on every possession. What sort of weird grouping of 11 people on the other side of the offense are they using?

I need to email Kragthorpe and make sure he's watching this game. He should know of these apparently recent advances in the game.

by CardsFan922 on Oct 6, 2007 4:06 PM EDT   0 recs

Texas may be in trouble
OU had one big play downfield called back, and just hit another one. Bradford is putting the ball on the money - he converted a 3rd-and-14 just a minute ago with his back against the goalline, and as I type, he just dropped one in at the one. Really impressive drive.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 4:10 PM EDT   0 recs

Speaking of defense
GA/Tenn -- Tenn now up 14-0. Turned the TV over just in time to see Fulmer try to save his job with some trickeration.

You wonder about stuff like this. Lets say Fulmer wins today with a new game plan that involves a couple trick plays. Does he go back to same old boring SEC football next week? And lose?

by CardsFan922 on Oct 6, 2007 4:20 PM EDT   0 recs

I don't think he's played boring football
Tennessee has been spreading the field because it just can't run, from what I can tell. The Vo
