NATIONAL OPEN THREAD: THE COMMENTS WILL NOT BE TELEVISED

All games, anything goes. And unlike the Outback Steakhouse, I mean it: no rules. If they ever let me back in one of those places, they'll learn what real anarchy is.

Real anarchy, for example, is color-coded.

Good idea
We need a central hub for national chatter.

Why not here?

Let's see how it goes.....
Although for me, South Carolina already won, so it's one of those very weird, calm Saturday's.

I should probably get some things done I need to do.  I think I'll stay here and watch Illinois beat Wisconsin.

Here we go
Same for me USCKB, although for different reasons. Well, SC winning has me calm too (because they beat UK, thanks for that).

The UofL message boards are awash with player rumors and Kragthorpe horror stories. I can only stand it for a few minutes at a time, and I'll be here to see real football discussion all day.

Thanks, SMQ!

What games is everyone watching?
I've got the Ill/Wisc game on, and am using Gametracker to follow WVU/Cuse (which only I among the many on this thread will care about). This is my first season watching games in HD, and when games AREN'T in HD, I almost feel insulted. WVU/Cuse is on gameplan and on a local affiliate, and is not in HD.

Although with the orange uniforms, I'm not sure that's a bad thing.

What about everyone else?

Games...
I've got Illinois-Wisconsin. I really like Illinois - Arrelious Benn is obvious, but Rashard Mendenhall has to be one of the most overlooked backs in the country. Wisconsin is not very good on defense right now (see MSU last week), but Mendenhall is really strong. He's run through pretty much every defense he's faced going back to last year.

I see Auburn's going with some kind of "throwback" look, but the only difference is there's no logo on the helmet. I guess AU hasn't changed its uniform design in 50 years.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 1:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

...more Auburn jersey thoughts...
They should have brought out the Pat Sullivan era, see-through, tear-away mesh, the flimsiest uniforms on any level of all time. You could see every detail of the old, barely functional shoulder pads underneath. That's the sort of thing people pay to see when you're playing Vanderbilt.

by SMQ on Oct 6, 2007 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep
Honoring the 1957 MNC team, which was one of the most bad-a$$ defenses you'd ever want to see.

And yes, they 'sperimented with wierd jerseys, but it wasn't the Pat Sullivan era, it was under Dye in the 80s when folks like Bo Jackson wore 'em.

As to the game, what happened to that anemic AU offense?

It's all working for Illinois...
...Juice Williams, with all day to throw, just lobbed up a duck that should have been picked off by two Wisconsin players on the sideline, and his fullback of all people went up and took it away...aaaaand touchdown Mendenhall. Illinois is kicking ass.

Having to go to CH next weekend without tickets, and this is only going to convince their fans they have a chance to beat us.

I'm still infuriated we scheduled this game if UNC was only going to give us 6k tickets.  I'm in the DC area so I'm not getting the AU / Vandy game, but all of the ones we have right now are crap up here.  I think WVU v Cuse is the closest?

I'm watching Friday Night Lights replay on USA.  Please bring on UGA / UT.

Illinois blows coverage deep, true freshman burns em for a touchdown. This is where a losing team starts to fade. Big momentum possession coming up for the Illini now.

I'm not sure "everybody in the house was thinking run" on 2nd-and-12, Andre Ware, but Illinois' safeties sure were.

Two things
  1. Pat White was hurt again? Wtf. Maybe RichRod should reconsider the whole "let the franchise players get hit on every play for the last 2 years" strategy. You know, give someone else the ball every so often. Their season broke down last year after both Slaton and White had nagging injuries and had to play hurt or sit out.
  2. Both OU/Texas and GA/Tenn are at a commercial at the same time and I still couldn't turn on PSU/Iowa.

Will Dantonio ever learn?
At Wisconsin, 3rd and 2 just outside of FG range, down 3, a minute to go. Plenty of time to run the ball once or twice, even with no timeouts. We've been gashing them all day with the run. So what do we do? The same damn screen we'd run the last seven plays, they cover it both times, game over.

Against NW in OT, needing a touchdown, Ringer's averaging over 10 yards a carry (again!), we have 280 rush yards ... and we throw four times. Hoyer misses the receiver badly all four times. Game over.

When the game is on the line, put the ball in the hands of your best player, dammit! (And no, Hoyer is not your best player. On a good day he's adequate. On a bad day he's almost as wild as Morelli, though he at least has the sense not to throw a gazillion picks like Morelli does.)

John L made the same damn mistake every time. Dantonio didn't learn from that. And apparently he didn't learn from his own repetition of that mistake last week. If he doesn't learn after doing it a second time, maybe he shouldn't even get a second season. I hate saying that, but if he can't learn from his predecessor's mistakes or his own, he has no business being a coach.

And while I'm ranting, could we please, please recruit a damn corner?

Next up for MSU, Indiana, Ohio State, Iowa and Michigan. Indiana is heading for a bowl, Ohio State is the best team in the Big 10 by default, and Michigan holds the Spartans to a never ending position as the second fiddle in the state. They will beat Iowa, and maybe Indiana. Thats it.

OU had one big play downfield called back, and just hit another one. Bradford is putting the ball on the money - he converted a 3rd-and-14 just a minute ago with his back against the goalline, and as I type, he just dropped one in at the one. Really impressive drive.

Speaking of defense
GA/Tenn -- Tenn now up 14-0. Turned the TV over just in time to see Fulmer try to save his job with some trickeration.

You wonder about stuff like this. Lets say Fulmer wins today with a new game plan that involves a couple trick plays. Does he go back to same old boring SEC football next week? And lose?

by CardsFan922 on Oct 6, 2007 4:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think he's played boring football
Tennessee has been spreading the field because it just can't run, from what I can tell. The Vols just blocked a punt, then had two 15-yard penalties after the play, so it was almost like a punt with the final field position.

that's my anti-SEC bias coming through. This year actually the SEC has a couple exciting offenses. But whatever Tennessee is doing today, they haven't been doing it all season, right? Or is it just working against GA?

Okay, I need some help here. I have no dawg in the GA/Tenn fight, so to speak. I only want to ensure UK does not have a chance to win the SEC East. Since Tenn is now 1-2 and Ga is 2-1 I assume that I should be rooting for GA?

Texas has found something
in Oklahoma's defense, because they just burned LB Ryan Reynolds down the middle with JerMichael Finley twice for big plays on that drive. Had one earlier, too. Oklahoma has to adjust to get a safety on him - Finley is a "tight end," but, you know, he's a receiver. Reynolds has no chance.

Except ...
... if the ball is touched by the receiving team on a punt, the kicking team can't advance it if they recover. You can only advance it if they gain possession and then fumble. (At least, that's how it is in the NFL. Don't think it's different in college, but I could be wrong.)

I hate to pull for injuries, but ever since SC lost Brinkley, I could handle the fair trade of our biggest rival losing one of their best.

Hope he's OK, just not effective against USC.  And I also hope Clemson continues to be the Clemson they always have been - good enough to keep Tommy from getting fired, but not good enough to do anything of consequence.

Except for the part where they beat USC.  I hope that stops.

How long before Clemson grows tired of his little "do just enough to not get fired" schtick and actually, you know, fires the guy?  Nine years should be plenty of time to decide if he's the guy.

I don't know....
But with Spurrier finally beating him last year, and it looking like we'll have the better team again this year, South Carolina fans are in no hurry for those in Tiger Town to figure this out.

One day the Clemson administration will wake up and realize that in the last dozen years they will have not played for the ACC title, let alone won the thing.  And they'll wonder how they ever let it happen to themselves.

What a good game, the last few years its been all blowouts, this was a nice change of pace. Both teams played to their full potential, and the breaks went OU's way this game. Mccoy obviously played as well as he could but his one int proved costly, and murrays TD run was the game changing performance.

OK, how does this happen? (Chattanooga @ Ark)
Looking only at Yahoo!'s play-by-play. Kickoff goes for touchback, and on 1st and 10 from their own 20 Arkansas gives up a safety. Play-by-play says "Dick up the middle for no gain. Safety."

Guessing a shotgun snap over his head and he recovered it in the endzone, but he doesn't have negative rushing yardage in the box score.

LSU lined up regularly
LSU was supposed to line a ton of guys up on the side of the field with all the linemen.

Maybe when they practice it next time, they say, "if they only have 2 guys over there, throw it to the fast guy behind the entire line."

Also, good point by the announcer, re: the center raising his arm before snapping. It looks like he is pointing out a blocker, so I wonder if LSU will pick up on it.

Less interesting than USC/Stanford...
...only because of the situation.

I haven't followed the Big 12 North much but you have to think the Mizzou/Illinois game was more interesting than we knew at the time.

And I'm a skeptic of the whole Callahan experiment at Nebraska. Eventually they have to say it either worked or it didn't, and it doesn't appear to be the former.

The Mizzou/Kansas/Colorado round robin decides it I guess.

So does OSU jump them because people just can't pull the trigger on a team with Hippies in the Trees as the best in the country?

Does Florida jump from 9th to 1st?

Here's your top 5:

  1. Cal
  2. OSU
  3. USF
  4. Boston College
  5. Notre Dame

  1. cal
  2. ohio state

USF at nuber 1
Seriously, why the fuck not at this point

Notre Dame
Hey, they're actually winning.  Even the suckfest that is Notre Dame football 2007 cannot stop the Karl Dorrell era at UCLA.

by Tom on Oct 6, 2007 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK State just blew its chance
Getting the ball back down 24-23 w/ 1:45 to play, OSU sent the house and roughed the punter. Game's probably over.

I'm a man! I'm 45!
I'm not going to run a 2-minute offense when I can go for the high% punt block with little to no downside!

Not too surprised about ND
I mean, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in awhile. Or 5 turnovers, as the case may be.

UCLA's quarterback
is named McLeod Bethel-Thompson?  That sounds like the name of a law firm, not the name of a BCS quarterback.

by Tom on Oct 6, 2007 11:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i think he is the
18th stringer...

they have had injuries galore at QB over in westwood.

but karl dorrell is going to be fired, that is one certainty in this season of uncertainty.

woof
I thought LSU should have kicked right there. Makes me look like  apussy. But they needed the sure points.

if lsu loses...
there will be 9 undefeated teams left in college football (division 1-a). they are:

boston college
kansas
missouri
connecticut
south florida
ohio state
arizona state
california
hawaii

just wow.

cincy?

Don't be so sure about Missouri.
They are still coached by Gary Pinkel.  No lead is safe.

by Tom on Oct 6, 2007 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Possibly the dumbest challenge ever?
I mean, I understand that field position is important, but is 10-15 yards really worth not having ANY timeouts for the rest of the game?

by CardsFan922 on Oct 6, 2007 11:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

seems like a waste
the official was right there

by EconoMz on Oct 6, 2007 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kind of a gamble
The SMQ comment thread has twice doubted Les Miles and look what's happened

by John on Oct 6, 2007 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow.
I will not doubt him anymore.

by CardsFan922 on Oct 6, 2007 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The question I have is
what did the replay officials - who are already looking at the play and apparently not going to stop the game to review it before the challenge - see after the challenge that made them change their minds?

He was saying
that it's a common misconception but he benches 435 and runs a 4.5 40

by John on Oct 6, 2007 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hey SMQ...
LSU has a white RB, why not make fun of them too like you did with jake sharp and kansas?  ;)

and sharp is only one of our RBs, he splits time with brandon mcanderson...

Florida's D-line won that battle. All Hester.

Les Miles
Apparently was upset by the SMQ Comment Thread already moving Cal and Notre Dame ahead of him in the top 5.

five bucks says

it would only be fitting...

I've got five saying
LSU doesn't get it on third down and Les Miles confounds us all by kicking the field goal.

they just get it on third down.

That could explain the four picks.
But that still doesn't explain how USC lost.  (I know, I know, the four picks are the reason why USC lost... but come on, if the guy broke his middle finger, either go to Sanchez or run the damn ball.)

by Tom on Oct 7, 2007 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

With all the athletes on that field
Jacob Hester is the player of the game.

by SMQ on Oct 7, 2007 12:02 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Only because..
...Les Miles's humongous testicles were not eligible.

On "gutcheck saturday"(R), appropriate that Hester helps them win that game.

Miles' humongous testicles
I screamed nooooooooooo!!!!!!!!1111!1!1!11!oneoneone at least four times during that last 5 minutes.  After two and a half seasons of "WTF?  Seriously, WTF?"  I am now a officially a fan of The Hat...assuming he doesn't let the team do the usual LSU tendency of beat Florida/Auburn/Tennessee and lose the next week to Kentucky/Ole Miss/Vanderbilt.

Utah St @ Hawaii
Been listening to this one since the last of the other games ended....

Hawaii's got the biggest HFA in football, and evidently it comes with homer officials. The Rainbows aren't that good.

Their opponents so far, ARE that bad....

Hawaii's Home-ref Advantage
>>> Hawaii's got the biggest HFA in football, and evidently it comes with homer officials.

Yeah, it does. I remember playing them in '04, and it was to the point where the radio commentators, after any gain of more than 8 yards by MSU, would say "okay, where's the flag ... oh, there it is."

I realize that John L's teams took an obscene number of penalties as a general rule, but that game was even more ridiculous than usual. I think we got called for almost 25 penalties, including at least two long TDs that got called back on phantom holds. And I heard rumors from NW fans that the same thing happened to them the week before ... coincidentally, Hawaii needed both wins to be eligible for their hometown bowl game.
