Florida State is now 5-0 and has done nothing to prove that they should be ranked #4 in the nation.
#4 Florida State managed to sneak by unranked USF today 30-17 to advance to 5-0, but does this win make us believe that Florida State is good enough to be ranked #4 in the nation?
I say no, but of course many may disagree with me on the grounds that Florida State has dominated the majority of their opponents. During weeks 1 through 3 Florida State played against such pathetic competition (Murray State, Savannah State, and Wake Forest) that they outscored their opponents 176-3, which boosted them to their current #4 ranking. Then in week 4 Florida State's boastful defense gave up 37 points, 21 in the first half alone, to a Clemson team that was not playing their A-game.
Now in week 5 we suddenly see this supposedly great defense give up 17 points to a USF team that has lost two in a row to Rutgers and Ball State, respectively. And only score 23 points (defense recovered fumble for TD) against a defense that has gave up 31 points against both Ball State and Nevada. Keep in mind that this 'high powered' Florida State offense has been averaging about 56 points per game.
South Florida committed 3 turnovers, 2 of them directly leading to 10 FSU points, compared to FSU's 0 turnovers. Had it not been for this single statistic, Florida State could have easily lost to unranked USF and find themselves reminiscing about the past times when they thought they were actually good. At any rate, I'm think they should drop a couple rankings when the week 6 polls are released. Although I think they should really be ranked more around the 20ish area, at best.
