Around SBN: The Infuriating Jose Molina

They All Fall Down. Yarr.

The demise of my ill-fated "Lock of the Week" complicates mythical championship matters in one very specific way - if the Sooners go on to knock the North champion out of the nominal title game in two weeks, opening the door for Ohio State or West Virginia - but there will plenty of time for BCS navel-gazing directly. In the meantime, in honor of probably the biggest win of Mike Leach's head coaching career: guns up, los banditos!

Man...
If LSU loses or Oklahoma ends up winning the Big 12, then there's gonna be a big-ass argument when it comes to West Virginia/Ohio State.

The computer rankings will likely be pretty close, especially since WVU gets to play UConn.  That'll also help them in the minds of the voters, especially if they win big.  And I'd argue that WVU's played a better out-of-conference schedule, including a pretty impressive dismantling of Missisippi State. (who nobody outside of LSU really pounded this year) The Big 11's a little bit better top-to-bottom, but certainly the top-half of the Big East is reasonably comparable this year.

I get the sense that when it's all said and done we're going to see a reverse of Michigan/Florida and the pollsters will jump Ohio State ahead of West Virginia this week (even though I'd argue Cincinnati could beat Michigan on a neutral field) and the Big East will get jammed again.

maybe im overdoing this big televen thing...
but i am fairly irrational right now. i hate the big televen so much, mostly because of the hours of michigan-tosu footage i have endured throughout the day in cutsie pie little highlight packages (if you can what was quite possibly the most boring game in the history of the world 'highlights'; it was more interesting watching duke-nd) and the long, 5 minute+ discussions on the future of michigan after always underachieving lloyd carr retires.

GAHHH!!!!

in any case, i think that west virginia is CLEARLY the better team and has a better resume. they won @ rutgers, they won vs. mississippi state, they won @ cincinnati. they will have to beat connecticut.

ohio states resume consists of one good win (@ michigan) and a couple of halfway decent ones (@ penn state, vs. wisconsin). what i dont get is how ohio state never got the 'who have they played' treatment even though our schedule isnt much different than theirs. whatevs.

still, west virginia is the best team in the country IMO right now. the dixon-led oregon ducks were the best, hands down, but now that dixon is out for the year west virginia is the best. lsu is a pretty close second, and the kansas-misery winner at third. tosu is around 6th or 7th.

i hate the big televen.

SOS
For what it's worth, the NCAA pegs Ohio State's strength of schedule at 40th overall, while West Virginia's is 62nd.

Not sure what the deal is with you and the B10...
...but a few things:
  1. Say what you want about the "highlight" quality of the OSU/UM game, but I was there and I can tell you that the weather was about as bad as I can imagine.  36 and rain.  Just awful - no way, no how does any team do anything offensively out there.  It was brutal - much more so than you could see on TV (I've already rewatched the game a few times).
  2. You've hammered away at the OSU schedule issue, and I agree that they haven't played an exceptionally great slate this year, but I don't get your take that everyone is looking past their schedule.  There's probably a bit of reference bias (from both of us), but I feel like the media has crapped all over OSU's schedule and the Big Ten this year.  No, the conference isn't great in 2007, but it's not nearly as bad as everyone thinks.
  3. I strongly disagree about WVU being the best team out there, but I guess we'll have to (again) agree to disagree.  And like the other poster pointed out, there schedule isn't so wonderful.
  4. In all honesty though, I'm not even sure I care where OSU winds up this year (Rose or MNC game) because, as SMQ has repeatedly pointed out, a true championship isn't going to be crowned no matter what happens (at least as "true" as a non-playoff system champion can be), unless KU wins out.  I just want to see OSU beat someone that everyone agrees is legit so as to erase the ill-will from last year.  It's amazing how so many cast a program and league aside after one miserable outing (albeit an all-timer of an egg).  But such is life in a knee-jerk reaction world.

What about...
Mizzou or Arizona State?  Either one of those teams as one loss conference champions, would have as good an argument as WFVU or tOSU to included in the national title discussion.

RE:
I think the assumption we're operating under is that if the Big 12 North Champ beats Oklahoma in the title game, then they will go to the BCS championship game. The real kink comes if Kansas/Missouri lose to OU. As for ASU, I would say they've fallen off the map after that Oregon loss, but I'm not so sure they were ever on the map to begin with. Who knows.

If LSU looses
and OU wins the Big 12 then BOTH WFVU and tOSU would play for the MNC.
