NATIONAL OPEN THREAD: LEAVE 'EM IF YOU GOT 'EM

Noon to midnight, today looks like the SEC's day all the way through.

Florida-Kentucky and Auburn-LSU are national, but if you live outside the grasp ofLincoln-Financial's lo, lo-def SEC coverage (as I do now, after so many years of Ole Miss-Vanderbilt), try the live video feed at Yahoo! Sports for Alabama-Tennessee. Looks like I'm going to have to download some media players or somesuch, but I'm going to try to have that one up and running on the laptop.

Comments below! If you're watching the big games in the South or want to fill us in on what's going on regionally - West Coast, we love y'all, but we don't get your games - get your gameface on, come to play, take every down as it comes, trust in your teammates, and comment like no one has ever commented before.

WTF?!
Why did ESPN have Marcus Thigpen banging a football into a piƱata sun?

Sun
I can't believe how easily Indiana went down the field.  As for the sun, wtf, what does that have to do with Penn State or Indiana.

by Vol Navy on Oct 20, 2007 12:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I have a sneaking suspicion
Indiana might be pretty good on offense. They got reamed by Michigan State last week, but the problems they've had (IU is 5-2, after all) have been on defense.

by SMQ on Oct 20, 2007 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Order of watching
they're just going to kick Penn State's ass all the way around. IU's defensive line just destroyed that 3rd-and-1 run from the start.

Are any of them even mildly attractive? Or, uh, audibally aware? A lot of awkward yelling going on in those intros.

My girlfriend

Hey!
There's Anthony Morelli, floating up a prayer to get picked in the end zone. I was thinking he had developed into a leader or something...or....what was it that guy said?

Another game, another inexplicable interception.  Overthrew that receiver by 15 yards.

ESPN
is going all out for impenetrable absurdity in its pre-recorded clips for this IU-PSU game. What was Kellen Lewis spraying into the camera there? Whatever it was supposed, the metaphor of a guy reaching below his waist, out of frame, and shooting liquid up into the lens can't be what they were going for.

One of the Dave's just said that John Parker Wilson is a blue collar kind of guy.  Apparently, blue collar means you are not very good at playing quarterback.

I take it back
JPW is throwing at willl.  SMQ, Alabama came out with an onside kick.  They had 5 players suspended right before the game for receiving illegal textbooks.

Well
Web video for Bama-Tennessee is not going to happen for me. Keep us updated, LF viewers. Vol Navy?

by SMQ on Oct 20, 2007 12:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No problem
Bama went onside kick with the opening kickoff, recovered it, and now are moving down the field however they want to. Tennessee's defense didn't look ready to go on the field. Drive stalls thanks to a fade overthrown by 15 yards by JP Wilson.

39 yard field goal attempt by Bama: good, 3-0 Bama.

Morelli zipped that one. He's actually been sharp aside from the atrocious interception.

North Dakota State
It doesn't surprise me NDSU is beating Minnesota, but the No. 1 team in I-AA is ineligible for the playoffs? That doesn't seem right, even during a 'transition period.'

by SMQ on Oct 20, 2007 12:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

How does that work?
It wasn't clear why they were disallowed from postseason competition.  There's a 5-year transition period in moving to the Championship Subdivision?

UT's D
Looks like it wasn't just because of the onside kick - Tennessee's defense just didn't come ready today. Wilson just completed a floating duck for 43 yards to DJ Hall.

He had that great catch against Tennessee last year.

by SMQ on Oct 20, 2007 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

DBs
Tennessee's freshman dbs are getting abused.  Alabama is not even trying to run the ball.  Most of the time there is not even a player within two yards of the receiver we are giving them such a cushion.

by Vol Navy on Oct 20, 2007 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Les Miles Fever!
On 4th and inches from about the Tennessee 19, Bama decides to go for it. They also decide to run a play where 8 guys shift before the snap, and Tennessee actually bites, jumps offsides, and first down Alabama.

The Vols' defense just doesn't look into it today. On 3rd and 4, Wilson rifles a ball off the goal post stand 7 yards ahead of the receiver, but Tennessee roughs the passer in a very obvious way. First down Bama.

Trickeration!
Bama had 4th and 1 from their own 19ish and Saban sent them out there in a weird formation.

Then like 4 guys from Bama "shifted" like they were getting into a new formation, Tennessee feel for it and jumped offsides.

after the opening kickoff onside kick, Saban is just messing with Fulmer now.

Indy-PSU
Indy went for it on a 4th and 12 at the PSU 36. Didn't make it, but it's the right call. Too long for a FG (into the wind), and you never, ever punt there unless it's about 30 seconds to go and you're up by more than a FG.

Tennessee Adjusts
UT decides to go no huddle to get in a better rhythm, and it's working. Erik Ainge and Arian Foster are just punishing the Alabama defense for at least 6-8 yards on every play on this drive so far.

Bama gives UT a first down from pass interference in the endzone on third down, and Arian Foster puts it in the next play. 10-7 Bama.

10 - 7 Alabama
Tennessee ran the ball all over the Bama defense on that drive.  It looks like Bama is afraid of the pass and Arian Foster is having his way with the defense. I would guess he had at least 40 yards rushing on that drive with no run less than 3 yards until the td score from the 2.

Ainge to Foster on the sideline route, Foster runs the rest of the way to the endzone, but it's called back for a block in the back at the 11. The guy didn't even need to do it.

Tenn gets a TD called back
Great play call, play action wheel route to Foster.

the TE blocked the last defender right in the back at the goalline, even though foster probably would have scored anyway. Tenn got the ball at the 15.

One of the Daves, "Boy, you don't see that very often."

by CardsFan922 on Oct 20, 2007 1:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Crap call
Tennessee had a long TD pass called back to the AL 10 because of a crap block in the back call. The defender turned his back to the blocker for no reason. TN now has 3 and 2 from the 4 at the end of the 1st quarter.

Blake Mitchell?
ESPN.com gamecast says mitchell is in at QB. Smelley's line is 2-4, 14 yards, 1 INT.

Can he lead them back from down 17-0 to vandy?

I guess the transitive analysis, SC barely beat GA and GA barely beat Vandy, so clearly Vandy should beat the snot out of SC.

Not a bad decision
Especially if you don't have confidence in your FG kicker at long range. Didn't work, obviously, but in the long run it's probably the right decision unless your kicker is really good.

I'm going to be listening to this while I make a fairly elaborate sandwich. It's just one of those fired up/sleepwalk games, I guess. What's this? A punt??
On third and inches at midfield, Tennessee throws rick, gets stuffed, and punts. The punt goes through the endzone for a touchback, and an illegal formation penalty on UT gives Bama the ball at the 25.

...the way the first half ended, that could be game. Looks like PSU will have to settle for a FG, though, so the Hoosier D might be stepping up. Announcer's right: that could have been a disaster.

Touchdown Bama
Tennessee deflects a pass in the endzone and intercepts it, but as it turns out, it was pass interference that cause the deflection. 1st and goal on the 2 with 16 seconds to go in the half. 8 penalties on Tennessee already.

Next play Wilson hits DJ Hall on a classic fade route. 10 catches, 132 yards, TDs for Hall already. 24-14 Bama.

Let's see
With 12 seconds to go in the half, Alabama:

A) Kicks it out of bounds, then on the rekick squibs it and Tennessee recovers at the 45,

B) Lets Ainge complete about a 20 yard pass,

C) Tacks on an extra 15 yards with a late hit out of bounds penalty.

Sets up a Tennessee field goal attempt, which goes through. Saban is absolutely livid and swears while talking to one of the LF Sports Daves going into halftime. 24-17 Bama at the half.

Halftime in Columbus
OSU still up 17-0. We've got about 75 yards of total offense. The Buckeyes look like they're for real.

Nice looking drive...
for USC?  Decent passing, some catches, a couple of decent runs.

by marcillac on Oct 20, 2007 5:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Ha
Jump pass - not only a short pass, but with Tebow running to the line, probably the shortest TD pass ever in terms of actual distance travelled from QB to receiver.

by SMQ on Oct 20, 2007 5:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I dunno
Brad Johnson's TD pass to himself probably has it beat. (It got batted back, he caught it and ran it in.)

Where is our pass defense?
(Oh wait, we're MSU. We don't have one.)

Thank the gods Boeckman keeps overthrowing his receivers.

TEBOW
The guy is really good.

Could he win 2 heismans?

What kind of NFL player will he be?

by CardsFan922 on Oct 20, 2007 5:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I am confused
Two defensive TDs for MSU. That shouldn't happen.

by SpartanDan on Oct 20, 2007 5:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Texas Tech
So many missed opportunities - they consistently move to the 35, then get stymied.

by RotoJeff on Oct 20, 2007 5:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Good call by Brooks
And good play by the kicker.

Looks like he caught it right before the 40. Hard to overturn that.

Feel good moment
Watching USC - ND makes me feel much better about my team.  No matter how bad we play; we are still way better than Notre Dame.

by Vol Navy on Oct 20, 2007 6:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Also
it does not appear that a lack of cutting the grass has helped Notre Dame perform.  The grass has to be at least twice as long as what you would see on a normal field.

by Vol Navy on Oct 20, 2007 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Very impressed with Kentucky
but soon the fatigue from last week will start kicking in (vide LSU in 4th qt last week) and the extra rest from Florida is likely to lead to a rout.  Or not.  Hope the 'Cats can keep this going.

by marcillac on Oct 20, 2007 6:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

MSU cuts it to 24-17
Only 4 minutes or so left, though. Might not be enough time unless we can get another defensive score.

Karl Dorrell = Gutless
4th-and-inches on the Cal 38, UCLA does the old "try and draw them offsides" routine, fail, take the delay penalty and punt. Touchback. I can't think of a more worthless decision, trailing by 1.

by RotoJeff on Oct 20, 2007 6:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

UCLA is doomed
You can't win games with Preposterous Punts (to borrow from TMQ). Cal will march the length of the field for the icing score.

by SpartanDan on Oct 20, 2007 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

TMQ!
Great reference - I'm a big proponent of this 4th down/punt theories. Even though it backfired on Texas Tech today.

He took a knee
The OSU return man took a knee on the kickoff. Mein Gott, we just might have a chance. (MSU did that last year against Notre Dame - and that was when I knew we were done.)

by SpartanDan on Oct 20, 2007 6:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Never mind
Us having a chance would depend on our ability to stop the run. Didn't happen. Game over.

by SpartanDan on Oct 20, 2007 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

knee on a kickoff
That's done when a team is in onside protect (as OSU was there) because blocking for a return isn't happening and the kicking team is running unfettered at the return man.  Otherwise someone gets hammered and fumbles.

by osuvandy on Oct 20, 2007 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting
I've only seen it once before, and MSU was definitely not in onside protect at the time.

by SpartanDan on Oct 21, 2007 1:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

FSU 26-Miami 24
Is anyone watching?  The score seems to indicate a good game but we don't know how they came by the points.  Productive offense or, MUCH more likely, a guzzilion fuckups.

by marcillac on Oct 20, 2007 6:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

In the Rotation
But like Option #5 - behind UK-FLA, UCLA-CAL, tOSU-MSU (just ended), Tech-Mizzou (effectively ended).

Not in the rotation? Notre Dame (one look at the uni's was enough to detract from the train wreck appeal).

by RotoJeff on Oct 20, 2007 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cal/UCLA
Maybe someone already commented on this, but does Fouts think this game's on the radio?  Complete play-by-play is a little much.  And weird.

by osuvandy on Oct 20, 2007 6:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

argh
I'm waiting for ESPN/ABC to switch to one of these great finishes (Miami-FSU, Cal-UCLA) but only the same highlights and...wait! Wait! UCLA runs an INT back on the local affiliate. To ice the game? Never mind.

by SMQ on Oct 20, 2007 6:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

TD Bruins
76-yard INT TD return.

I'm changing my "this is the type of game UCLA wins" now to "this is the type of game UCLA has a stunning collapse and loses."

Kentucky never goes away
Do they? Now UK has to figure out how to get Florida off the field to get the ball back.

That bomb to Harvin was one of the most aggressive calls I've ever seen. Who throws the ball deep with a lead and no time outs on the other side?

by SMQ on Oct 20, 2007 7:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Uh....
Kansas just had a delay of game called on its punt return team. No explanation.

by Boy Howdy on Oct 20, 2007 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Possum
I think Colorado just ran a fake broken play: Cody HAwkins intentionally stumbled out from center, apparently missed a handoff, Kansas went to sleep for a second in the secondary and Hawkins pulled up and hit his tight end running wide open for about a 35-yard touchdown. Had to be an intentional fake.

This is why I hate these ESPN in-game interviews
That was a huge pick, and the announcers are not even talking about it.

by CardsFan922 on Oct 20, 2007 7:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.
I'm sure a few Colorado fans (probably at the game, anyway) are interested in CU's new basketball coach, but it's pointless. A close game is entertaining enough.

Mike Hart in street clothes
I don't know how much confidence I have in Michigan minus Hart...think 2005...he's always been the engine for that team.

I love that play
Everyone runs one way and the TE runs the other...

Petrino (sob sob sob whygodwhy?) used to run a play like that.

Worked everytime.

man that was fast for Illinois.

Did Mangino plan this?
Save his best team for the year when he doesn't have to play Texas or Oklahoma? They've got one difficult game left.. home against Missouri for the Big 12 North Title.  Nice win in Boulder.

Win?
It's still a game from where I'm sitting.  Am I missing something?

I'm predicting a interception for KU
I was watching Michigan-Illinois, I still think that KU will win.  Though they do have to punt from their endzone now.

by displacedfan on Oct 20, 2007 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gotcha
Was wondering if I had sat on the remote 15 minutes ago and ended up watching the game on a delay.

by Boy Howdy on Oct 20, 2007 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

this bothers me...
sure, not playing oklahoma is nice, but i am pretty confident we would wax texas.

texas hasnt impressed me at all all year long, we are a better football team than the longhorns this year, plain and simple.

i would rather play texas than oklahoma state...

thanks.
and sorry for blowing up, i just get defensive when the first really good season my football team has had in a LOOOOOONG time is credited to the schedule.

Henne's hurt too..
Juice Williams may run the read option pretty well but his upside as a passer is Reggie Ball.

"Brandon Cox is an accurate thrower"
Who is this announcer? I would strongly disagree with that statement.

UW ties it up against Oregon
according to the ticker, at least.

Using my remote control, however, I have confirmed that Oregon is completely in control and will win.  The game is not being shown on Versus.

Muschamp's all:
BOOM MOTHERFUCKER

by John on Oct 20, 2007 10:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well, that sucked
I really thought Illinois would win, especially with Hart out and once Henne went down. I hadn't reckoned with their impressive footgun skills. Roughing the punter creates probably a 10-point swing right before the half, numerous facemask penalties keeping drives alive, and then the muffed punt. Ye gods, you have one job to do: CATCH THE FUCKING FOOTBALL!
